Best Motorhomes for Couples

Written by:  Chris Dickson
Couple with a motorhome

If you’re touring as a pair, you don’t need the size, weight or price tag of a family-sized motorhome. The best motorhome for couples is usually a compact layout built around one comfortable, permanent bed, enough storage for two people’s belongings, and a washroom and kitchen sized for everyday use rather than occasional family holidays. Most 2 berth motorhomes are lighter, easier to drive and less expensive to run than larger family models, though brand and specification still make a real difference to price and comfort.

What Couples Need from a Layout

Unlike a family layout, which has to fit multiple beds and separate zones for children, a couple’s motorhome can be built around what two people actually use every day. That usually means one proper sleeping area rather than several convertible ones, enough day-to-day living space for two, and dimensions that are easy to drive and park.

It’s worth looking for a bed you don’t have to make up each night, a washroom you can use without disturbing the rest of the van, and enough worktop and storage for genuine daily living rather than just weekend breaks. A smaller, lighter motorhome can also make touring considerably easier if either of you is new to driving a larger vehicle.

Best Layouts for Two

Most 2 berth motorhomes and campervans are built around one of four bed layouts, each with its own trade-offs:

  • Fixed island bed: a double bed set lengthwise at the rear with walk-around access on both sides. Comfortable and always ready, though it takes up floor space that can’t be used for anything else.
  • French bed (rear transverse bed): a double bed set across the width of the van at the rear, which frees up a large garage underneath, useful for bikes, outdoor gear or a couple who travel with a lot of kit. The Pilote Atlas A630G, from the Pilote range we stock, is a good example of the format: a 140cm bed sits over a garage with close to 2,000 litres of storage, and it was named Best 2-Berth Motorhome at the Practical Motorhome Awards 2026.
  • Twin single beds: two separate beds running along each side at the rear instead of one shared double. It suits couples with different sleep schedules, and on some models it works well for taller travellers too. The Malibu Relax 640 LE R, from the Malibu range we stock, has beds over 2 metres long on each side and was named Best Value Campervan at the Practical Motorhome Awards 2026.
  • Drop-down or overhead bed: a bed that lowers from the ceiling above the lounge, keeping the layout flexible during the day and useful if you occasionally want to host a guest, though it means making up a bed rather than leaving one permanently set.

As a rule of thumb, choose a fixed bed if you travel often or for long stretches, and a drop-down or twin layout if you want more flexibility or occasionally travel with a guest. Our current range includes Malibu, Pilote, Itineo, Rapido and Roller Team, all of whom build well-suited layouts for two, though exact models and trims in stock change regularly. Storage & Comfort

A fixed bed frees up space elsewhere in the van, and that space usually goes towards storage: a proper wardrobe rather than a shared cupboard, a garage for outdoor gear, or simply more worktop and cupboard space in the kitchen. Not having to convert the lounge into a bed each night also means you can leave things set up rather than packing away every evening and unpacking every morning.

A fixed washroom, separate from the rest of the living space, tends to matter more to couples living in a motorhome for extended periods than it does for a family on a week’s holiday. If you’re planning longer trips or full-time touring, it’s worth prioritising a layout with a proper, separate washroom over one with a slightly larger lounge.

Budget Considerations

Smaller 2 berth motorhomes are often more affordable than larger family coachbuilts or A-Class models, simply because they use less material and a simpler base vehicle. That said, brand and specification still make a substantial difference. A well-equipped compact model from a premium manufacturer can cost more than a larger, more basic layout, so it’s worth comparing specification as closely as size when you’re setting a budget.

Buying used can be a practical way to get a higher specification for your budget as a couple starting out, while buying new gives you a full manufacturer warranty and the exact layout you want from day one. Either way, finance and part-exchange are available to help spread the cost, and our team can talk you through the options for the vehicles you’re considering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most couples don’t need the size or weight of a family motorhome. A compact model, whether that’s a 2 or 4 berth layout, usually gives you enough living space for two while staying easier to drive, park and manoeuvre than a larger family-sized van.

A 2-berth motorhome is usually all you need if it’s just the two of you, and it tends to be lighter and easier to manoeuvre. Some couples choose a 4-berth instead for the extra garage or storage space, or to accommodate an occasional guest, but that comes with a longer, heavier vehicle to drive and park. Weigh up how often you’d actually use the extra space against the practicality of a smaller model.

A fixed island bed sits lengthwise at the rear with access on both sides and stays made up permanently. A French bed sits across the width of the van at the rear and frees up a garage underneath. A drop-down bed lowers from the ceiling above the lounge when needed, keeping the layout flexible during the day but meaning you make up a bed each night.

Generally, yes. Smaller, lighter motorhomes tend to use less fuel and often fall into lower insurance groups than larger family-sized models, though the exact cost depends on the specific vehicle, its value and your own circumstances. Our team can talk you through running costs for any model you’re considering.

Both have advantages. Buying new gives you a full manufacturer warranty and the exact specification you want, while buying used can get you a higher specification for the same budget. Compare our new motorhomes and used motorhomes ranges to see what fits.

Yes. The same finance options, including Hire Purchase and Personal Contract Purchase, are available regardless of the size of motorhome you choose, subject to status.
